Catalyst and KJ-52: Episode 91
by Lisa Anderson on 10/16/2009 at 4:19 PM

iTunes | Listen Now/RSS

Hey everyone! There is so much to talk about this week it is making me crazy. It's also making me want to type something random, like fasjkl;treaxitoa!trjekalow3rio34.

That said, in addition to my spiritual gift of rebuking, I also have the gift of telling people what to do. So I'm gonna tell you what to do. Right now. SEND THE LINK TO THIS PODCAST TO 10 OF YOUR FRIENDS AND TELL THEM TO SUBSCRIBE ON ITUNES.

Sorry for shouting at you, but this is important. The Boundless Show has almost cracked the Top 50 Christian podcasts on iTunes. We think this is due to Candice's presence on Focus on the Family this week as well as a bunch of people signing up in the wake of the Catalyst conference. But this is not enough. We need to get into the Top 25! We need to do this 1) because it would be awesome, 2) so more young adults can hear our rockin' content, and 3) so the Boundless team can make millions and buy a bunch of houses, cars and Webkinz.

Ok, forget #3. But the first two reasons are reason enough. DO IT. And post an iTunes review while you're at it, so we can reach at least 100 reviews before the Lord returns. Bless.

While I'm telling you what to do, please also do the following:

  • Tell someone about Jesus
  • Get married
  • Join a local church
  • Agree with me that the Black Eyed Peas' "Fill up my cup (DRANK!) ... mazel tov! (L'CHAIM!)" is the dumbest lyric in music right now

On to the show:

Chickfila

Catalyst Report -- 00:00

As you know from my previous post, I was at Catalyst 2009 in Atlanta last week. Catalyst is a conference for young leaders. I manned the Boundless booth and told people straight up to get their bitnit together. The response was positive (after the initial blank stare followed by closely-reined-in hostility). I introduced a ton of people to Boundless, most of whom had never heard of us (see opening paragraphs, above). I also met Truett Cathy, founder of Chick-Fil-A and all-around cutest man alive, as well as his son, Bubba. I ate some chicken. My visit with them rocked. As we open our show this week, Motte and I talk about Catalyst, Motte's questionable temperament, Chick-Fil-A and other things that are just random enough to merit being on the show.

KJ52 and Lisa

Kickin' It With KJ-52 -- 10:27

You know I like me some Gaithers. I also like me some hip-hop. This week I had the chance to live out the latter as KJ-52 (that's K-J-five-two) visited our studio and dropped some rhymes. He cracked me up like never before. I often crack myself up, but it's rare that someone else causes me to chortle and slap my knee. I did both this week. KJ does rap and hip-hop without the f-bombs, cop killings and misogyny found in much of the mainstream genre. But he still has the caps and shades, and let me hang with him as he freestyled for us in true street spirit:

Multiple Attraction Disorder -- 41:40

Is it wrong for a guy to be attracted to other women when he's dating or married? We know guys notice women, so what should they do (short of gouging their eyes out) when someone else captures their attention? And what if it's not just physical, but a harder-to-detect-and-treat attraction to someone's character and personality? Motte brings his thoughts (and both his eyes ... phew) to the discussion.

Start building your tell-a-friend lists. Now. I'm serious. Hello, why are you still reading this?...........

Oooh, and that's my teammate and friend, Esther, in the shot with the amazing Truett Cathy.

2

Mr Truett is a cutie pie! I use to work at his ranch (its about 10 minutes from my house) Part of my job was dealing daily with the famous cow "eat". Yes, they are/were real cows named "eat" "more" and "chicken" Hes such a godly man! (Mr Truett that is, not the cow)

3

Well Lisa, you will be glad to know that I am woman-ing up and committing to, moving nearer to, and joining my local church. Thank you and everybody who has drip-drip-dripped this message on us over the years. It's not always pretty, but it's wonderful! Thank you for telling us what [good things] to do ;)

4

You know, after last week's episode, this week was a welcome break. I found myself shaking my booty in my seat jammin' to the groovin' hip hop slammin' beats! :-) Shakin' whatcha momma gave ya!

5

Thanks for #1. I wasn't sure if that was a picture of Lisa, Truett and Cathy or Lisa, Truett and Bubba. Which would be interesting.

6

Lisa... You're pretty. Why any guy in Colorado ain't interested in you is a mystery to me.

7

Thanks for featuring KJ-52 this week!! My college roomie and I started listening to him our senior year in college. We even drove 3 or 4 hours with my roomie's brother to go see KJ in concert in another state. Little did we know the concert was mainly for a church youth group and we were the oldest ones there (other than the chaparones) AND the only ones who knew the lyrics to his songs. I think KJ got a kick out of the signs we made and held up during the concert: "You betta check yourself!"

8

#3: Yay, Julie! Good job. Let us know how it goes. I joined my church about 5 years ago, and am now on our adult ministry team, which oversees all the efforts and initiatives for adults in our church. It's great to serve and be given a voice!

#4: Michael, thanx for shakin' what yo momma gave ya. Nothin' wrong with getting excited about what God's doing in the world!

#6: Marc, that's so sweet of you. Thanks! I guess I don't have too many guys in my immediate acquaintance at church, so I'm taking Candice's and Carolyn's advice and trusting the Lord by waiting. And maybe occasionally trolling the nursing homes for widowers...

9

"Woman-ing up," huh? For some reason that made me laugh. I can't decide if it's just cute, or if the apparent existence of such a phrase is a sign of the final collapse of manliness.

10

Between my teenage students and Lisa, I may finally convert to enjoying hip-hop music.

Now if I could just enjoy jazz and country, I would have all the genres covered.

11

Great podcast! I listened on my jog this morning and although not normally a fan of rap, I think KJ-52 really helped me conquer those hills today.

Lisa, I love how you make the interviews so fun and interesting! You are entirely refreshing.

It's also fun seeing the pictures of the boundless staff popping up in various places! I Love to see the faces belonging to the voices.

Keep it up, and...I try to jog more than once a week so maybe you could consider doing more than one podcast a week...just a thought.

12

One thing that's been annoying me more and more over the course of the last several podcasts, is the whole commercial-craziness aspect of it.

e.g. in this particular podcast all the backlash against Kanye's (admittedly self-centered) comments at the Emmies.

Compare to John Waller's comments on the podcast a few times ago about the pain of not having "a national platform".

Mix with another guy a different week who was talking about how he got his first book out the door in a few weeks because he needed something about himself (telling the story of his life) to sell at Promise Keepers.

Look at the percentage of guests on the show trying to sell something. (Why so many musicians anyways?)

Compare to the introductory comments at the beginning of this post - somewhat sarcastic, but as typically seems to be the case quite self-promoting.

Doesn't seem all that much different than Kayne in terms of its basic focus.

P.S. Why the criticism about Sting's songs having too much content? (Isn't Boundless normally protesting the emptiness of much of modern culture?)

13

Wait...so the purpose of Webkinz is to to care for a virtual stuffed animal on the Internet instead of a real stuffed animal? Isn't it better exercise for littler girls to put stuffed animals into a stroller and push them around outside? Perhaps next they will be having virtual tea parties instead of serving imaginary tea to stuff animals...

14

I really enjoyed hearing from KJ on the podcast. Hearing musical guests on the show is always a treat - especially when they just get real and share about what God is doing in their lives.
And that video made me crack up. Lisa, you really added some "flava" to the beat. :)
On a random note I would like to thank Boundless for helping me get my laundry done. I usually listen to the show during the weekend sometime when I am folding and putting away laundry. It always seems to go by quicker when I'm listening to and enjoying a Boundless podcast!

15

@ Craig M #9 - I am a fan of the blog The Art Of Manliness, where every post ends with "Don't forget to man up!" So it is simply a case imitation being the sincerest form of flattery. Not that I want to be tough like a dude in the slightest bit... But I DO think most people of either gender in my generation could use a dose of decisciveness when it comes to making decisions, myself most certainly included, as seen in the books Just Do Something, and Do Hard Things. So I'm taking my own advice, and it is good.

Julie (#14) wrote:

The podcast is just about the right length for folding two loads, isn't it!

17

Note: a completely tongue-in-cheek comment follows.

Lisa,
I am eager to heed the wise counsel of a Christian woman more mature in her faith than I am, but I have a few questions:
Based on the fact that telling people about Jesus ranked #1, and being disgusted with black eyed peas lyrics ranked #4, I guess it's logical to conclude that the 2 other items on the list are also ranked in order of descending importance?
So here arises my issue: I have already gone through membership classes at the local church which I have been attending for the past year (since starting college), now the only remaining step is to meet with one of the long time members to walk through the membership covenant (which is all taken from scripture, for the record), and then sign the covenant.
But you have opened my eyes to the idea that getting married should be a priority before joining a local church, so I am not sure how to proceed from here. Should I indefinitely postpone my meeting to sign the membership covenant until I have met and married a godly man with whom I can live out an Ephesians 5 relationship? Or should I keep my plan to join the church right away, and pray fervently that the Lord brings the right man into my life within the next month? (note: that might be complicated considering that I won't turn 18 for another 3 weeks)
I appreciate your counsel, and await your feedback!

18

Hilarious video. Love it.
