A Night on the Wild Side
by Ted Slater on 04/29/2009 at 2:25 PM
During my first semester in college, I was invited by some friends to go on a cross-Michigan road trip from the UP's Marquette to Detroit. On a whim, I went.
The night of our arrival we all went to see "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." I may have brought a newspaper and squirt gun. I forget. I still remember those around me, though: in crazy outfits, shouting lines at just the right time, running up to the screen and appearing to climb up someone's face.
A theater of the absurd, truly.
After the craziness, we cleaned up, headed to the car, and drove back ... somewhere. It's been a while. And I wasn't, um, walking with the Lord at the time, so my memory is a bit foggy.
And that's precisely where my story differs from Christine Rhyner's, which she recounts in today's featured Boundless article, "A Night on the Wild Side." Just when she didn't think the night could get any wilder, her friends inadvertently abandoned her at the theater, which became desolate minutes after the midnight matinee ended.
So there she was at 2 a.m.: alone, walking abandoned streets, lost, miserable ... and then a car pulls up. And the window rolls down. And then she remembers that she's dressed like a transvestite.
Yeah. That's her introduction to the wildest part of the evening.

I thought this was a great article. It's amazing how God can work in our lives even before we become Christians... that is certainly my story. I've always enjoyed the articles and blogs on Boundless where the authors talk about their lives before knowing Christ and how they have changed... very encouraging! Thank you Ted for sharing...

Wow, what a nice person! A quiet act of service...that's what I see as 'service'. Not just a fun hour social service project. But spontaneous daring sacrifice at an inconvenient time. Of course we need to use our heads, but it worked out safely in this case. Little does he know (most likely) that his remembered kindness inspired an article.

The article was fascinating! I think her story would make a great short film.
Another article on here that would make an amazing feature film is the story of Ted Bundy, as told through the Q&A with... Dobson, was it? I wonder who would have the skill, guts, and worldview to pull it off?

I found Christine's article very moving and convicting. I was ashamed to realize that if I had seen that night, I probably would have judged her rather than helped. This was a good reminder of what putting the gospel into action really means.

There's something worth noting...
Tim Curry is very gifted and talented, Meatloaf is gutsy and can be very profound (esp Anything for Love), the Time Warp is a great track for a wedding reception dance,
and angels work with creativity and beauty in the midst of and beyond all of that.
