Daily Website Fixes
by Motte Brown on 06/25/2008 at 3:09 PM

I found this list interesting. It's the top 10 websites you can't live without.

1) Wikipedia
2) Yahoo! Finance
3) Craigslist
4) ESPN
5) Yelp
6) Facebook
7) Digg
8) Google
9) TMZ
10) Flickr

I only use Craigslist and Google from this list. But it got me thinking about the ones I can't do without. There's only about five that I'd really miss (not including anything work related). Here they are with a personal take:

1) Drudgereport -- I've been hooked ever since the Monica Lewinski animated-gif siren.
2) National Review Online -- Just great content on world affairs. And their blogs were way ahead of the MSM in the 2004 presidential election when all the exit polls showed Kerry was a lock.
3) Google -- Obvious. But I had to include it because I use it daily.
4) USA Today -- I love the McPaper. It's a great one stop shop for all things culture.
5) The Tigernet -- I fully admit that Clemson sports is an excess in my life. And this site is where that excess begins.

OK. I feel a bit exposed now. My frequency on these sites say something about me. Maybe I've overshared.

But what about you guys? Care to overshare?

i know you're all gonna judge, but... here they are:

1. my yahoo homepage.
2. cnn.com
3. icanhascheezburger.com (i loves me some lolcats!)
4. google of course
5. wikipedia of course
6. perezhilton.com. i know. i'm sorry. i'm working on it... i've cut back a lot. i'm not proud of this
7. evite. love it. couldn't throw big parties and gatherings without it.

2

Everytime I open my browser I open up the same pages everyday:

1) Mail
2)Foxnews and Drudgereport-- to get current events
3)Michellemalkin.com-- perhaps one of the brightest conservatives out there. Those who deride her tend to read only what other people have said about her, but her observations are eloquent, and right on the nose. She's the cultural analysis of the cultural events i read about in #2.
4) Albertmohler.com-- the President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary has the most incisive and biblically-based commentary on the issues that were read about in #2 and #3...
5) Boundless.org and boundlessline.org (as well as TrueU on occassion).
6) TheRebelution.com-- what i should have been reading a long time ago... too bad it wasn't around when i was a teenager.
7) PhoenixPreacher.com-- Pastor Micheal Newnham is a Calvinist guy, good character, who started the blog as a way to reform from within the Calvary Chapel movement, whcih with its governemet set up (senior pastor role especially) makes all-too easy the potential for abuse of the flock. It has cleaned up a lot since the community there has matured and hoping i myself find healing by reading what other people go through and how they deal with spiritual abuse.

I spend about an hour on my days off reading all of it, twenty minutes during work days (on break, of course). I wonder if its too much sometimes, but i feel compelled to be informed.

In prioritized order:

NIki -- yes, for some reason all of Focus on the Family's Web sites -- Boundless.org, TrueU.org, PluggedInOnline.com, FocusontheFamily.com, etc. -- are offline. Our IT people are looking into it.

Yeah, frustrating. I'll assume it's a bug and not a malicious response to something Dr. Dobson may or may not have said recently.

10

Adam T (8) -- while craigslist has some tacky, trashy aspects, some people do use it for buying stuff, selling stuff, and finding free stuff. That's actually how it started, IIRC.

I also forgot to list

My list is too long already, it would seem that’s all I do.
I really do work I don't just surf the net.

29

Nicole- Of course! I should have had IMDb on my list too. It is The All-Knowing Oracle in my books. (After Wikipedia). (I hope everyone notes the tongue-in-cheek there :P). I do love IMDb though. Otherwise, I do like YouTube though.

(My most recent youtube discovery- Naturally 7. Look them up, specifically "Wall of sound").

1. Google
2. Facebook
3. BBC
4. ESPN
5. Desiring God
6. Way too many blogs...Josh Harris, Al Mohler, Boundless, my own...

How crazy would it be for someone who died even in 1990 to see how information just shoots around the world.

I'm just waiting for the day Google Earth shows live shots from all around the world....

32

1. Boundless- I gave up facebook for lent this year, and needed a new homepage. My housemate suggested boundless, and it has remained my homepage since. Thank you.

2. Hotmail- I don't know if it is just my generation, but we don't exchange phone numbers anymore, just email addresses, so it is my only way to keep in contact with most friends.

3. Facebook- very proud to say that I only check it to see if anyone has used it as if it were email to tell me something important. No more creeping for hours. :D

10. Wikipedia.com

36

Thanks, Ted. I was getting worried!

Adam T,
Craiglist is a place where anyone can post a listing for anything, for free (the posting is free, not necessarily the item or service advertised). I have not checked in to anything X-rated but I found my apartment on the Philadelphia Craiglist website. You can also find jobs, furniture, etc.
Yelp is a review site for metropolitan areas. I've used it a couple of times to review a really good Thai restaurant or a recently franchised smoothie shop that is going downhill. You can find reviews, tips, pricing for a variety of retailers and services in any major city.
Hope that clears things up :)

37

My list of websites I'd miss...

1. NewReleaseTuesday.com(it's a Christian music website)
2. Google
3. Yahoo(for e-mail, and I read a lot of news after I log out)
4. Boundless :)
5. Facebook
6. Homestarrunner.com
and Maybe myspace, because I still log on a lot. I just don't use it for much of anything. Except maybe bands.

38

What I use the most vs. what I can't live without are drastically different.

I don't use them the most, but when I need them, I can't do without them:

1) Google.
2) Wikipedia.
3) Wachovia.

The rest I could do without if necessary...

39

Youtube, Myspace, Facebook, Google, Boundlessline, The Wittenburg Door, Siddity (Black and Angry since 1978), Burnside Writers Collective, TheLongbrake.com, Nappurality.com, University of Virginia (to check my school email), AlbertMohler.com, ComedyCentral (to watch the Daily Show and the Colbert Report).... yeah, I spend WAY too much time online.

40

1. Gmail
2. Facebook
3. Popmundo - a neat roleplaying game where you can become a music star...I have fun with it. :)
4. Boundless
5. Catholic Answers forums - I go to a Catholic college, so I got involved on these forums while learning about Catholicism. I'm not actually Catholic, but I've learned a lot from these forums.
6. my college email.

I will definitely be checking out some of the sites others have posted...

41

#23 I have had a facination with all things brit-com since I was 14 years old and my freind gave me a copy of the hitchikers guide to the galaxy to read. The list of my favorite brit coms is endles. The only show in the entire world that I can not do with out is Dr Who. I havent missed an episode.

42

My daily visits:
1. Facebook
2. Boundless
3. Radiant Magazine
4. Design*Sponge online
5. Oh Joy blogspot
...and a ton of other art and design blogs. There are lots of them.

43

My daily web fixes:

1. Google/Gmail
2. Yahoo
3. YLCF
4. Boundless
5. Radical Womanhood
6. Girl Talk Blog
7. BBC online

44

Hopefully this won't come across as overly judgmental, but doesn't this whole "discussion" seem a bit ... pathetic to anyone else? Listing the websites you visit most often for the world to see? It strikes me as even more obliviously self-indulgent than many people's blogs.

i know you're all gonna judge, but... here they are:
...
3. icanhascheezburger.com (i loves me some lolcats!)

I weep for the future.

45

A few of my favorites:

www.boundless.org

www.titansradio.com (Go Titans!)

www.eduwonk.com (Education Blog)

www.ednews.org (Education News/Commentary)

www.deviantart.com (Nice, though somtimes riske art site)

www.jewishworldreview.org (Excellent, oft-updated political commentary)

www.foxnews.com (It's going downhill since they moved more entertainment info to the top of the page)

46

I don't think it's pathetic at all - I've found out about some great and useful websites from discussions like this one in the past!

47

Goodsearch (I goodsearch for Not For Sale Campaign, Free the Slaves, Polaris Project, and International Justice Mission. Stop using google! Goodsearch!)
Gmail
Livejournal
BBC News (where else can I get my football? GO BLUES!)
The Point
My school website
A slew of research sites (academic research, not Wikipedia)
thehungersite.com

48

#41 Nicole
We love the brits too. Unfortunately getting the shows over here is not as consistent as we would like. Still fun though when we can see them.
#44 Jeremy
I kind of know what you mean, but hey it all seems light hearted and for some maybe a little informative.

49

1. facebook - happens to be my homepage because its the first thing i go to anyway

2. shanebweb.com - amazing. probably my favorite site considering i am a hardcore shane and shane fan. The forums on here are great. i recommend everyone to check it out.

3. Boundless

4. Monergism.com - very good theological information

5. desiringgod.org - John Piper .. good stuff.

6. hulu.com - amazing ... watch a ton of TV and movies on here, good SNL stuff on here

50

Been lurking on Boundless for two years - no kidding - and this is the first post. I guess it seemed a safe place to test the waters.

1. Google through Firefox- homepage
2. My.yahoo.com through IE - homepage
3. Mail.yahoo.com, and headlines through them, including BBC.co.uk and AP Europe, since that's where I live now
4. Hotmail, and headlines through MSN Messenger
5. Boundless
6. Wikipedia
7. LiveScience.com
8. eslcafe.com, multimadrid.com, and any other teaching ESL site
9. Webshots (screensaver, wallpaper, photo storage site, been with 'em for six years)

#41 - I just found the New Who, too. It's been a lovely ride so far, hasn't it?

51

This could be embarrassing/convicting. :)
In no particular order:
- Email (three accounts thus far...)
- Facebook
- Boundless
- Xanga.com
- IMDB.com
- sailsinc.org (my online library portal)

This next grouping are the sites that are frequent but not every day:
- Redsox.com
- Espn.com
- officetally.com (Fansite of "The Office")
- girltalk.blogs.com
- prayforian.com
- pluggedinonline.com (shout-out!!)
- Youtube

Oh, golly...

52

Mine are:

1. Gmail, Google Reader
2. Facebook
3. Blogger
4. Yelp
5. QVC/Amazon

53

Mine are (usually in this order):
Google homepage: includes e-mail, news, calendar, and to-do list.
School e-mail account
Facebook
Townhall.com

Those are everyday. The rest are whenever I have time:
WSJ.com, opinion (when I'm not at school -- then I can read a paper copy)
Boundless
Phdcomics.com (when I have time)

Usually I spend a lot of time on econnet -- through my school's library. And other research sites through my school's website.

OH, and when I spend my day at school I am always on my local talk radio website so I can listen to it through the computer.

54

1) www.news-gazette.com - news from local paper. i couldn't leave it out. i read it every day.
2) boundless.org - occasion
3) facebook.com - occasion
4) google.com - everday
5) msn.com - i'm not sure why...

55

Mine are:

- Yahoo mail
- Facebook
- Hotmail
- Boundless
- Craigslist
just got over my U-Tube addiction....

56

#44 - is there something wrong with lolcats? I happen to find them very amusing in a rather harmless way, as long as large amounts of time are not being wasted looking at them.

58

www.orthodoxytoday.org (Great articles about politics and faith...a nice alternative to all the reformed mumbo jumbo)

www.raidernews.com (I'm a die-hard Raiders fan...it's in my blood!)

www.profootballtalk.com (I have to get my fix)

www.aol.com

www.gmail.com

www.frederica.com (Amzing woman, amazing author)

www.answers.org (My mentors...amazing site)

www.merechristianfellowship.org (I'm hoping they update it soon)

www.touchstonemag.com

59

I forgot probably the one i really couldn't live without since moving to a new city last august! Google MAPS.. or mapquest. I use it probably twice a week and still rely on the directions I got from it EVERYDAY. Even if it occasionally forgets that the state capitol is in the middle of main st and tells me to go straight through it. :)

60

Ohh! I'm a sucker for a good list.

1. pandora.com (free customizable online radio)
2. craig's list (I'm in the market for a chair.)
3. gmail.com
4. facebook.com
5. cnn.com (for quick pre-work news scans)

Also, I second whoever recommended Hulu. Free episodes of Firefly make me a happy girl.

Moderators: Can we do a 'what are you reading' thread too?

61

Here are several sites I have suscribed to in my Google Reader...for those who don't know how it works, you can suscribe to blogs, etc., and scan through the new posts or titles...Convenient...you don't have to visit each website:

Between Two Worlds
Boundless
Challies Dot Com
Fresh Brew / Ungrind
girl talk
Ligonier Ministries Blog
Monergism
Of First Importance
Possessing the Treasure
Reformation Theology
Sovereign Grace Blog
The Blazing Center
The Shepherd's Scrapbook

Fun :)

62

Nicole and trying to stay balanced:

Yay for British TV. :P I didn't know there was a BBC America channel though, I just looked at the site and laughed out loud at the headline at the top: "Bloody Brilliant Television". SO funny.

As for the shows, Monty Python and Top Gear and such are great. But Cash in the Attic and Changing Rooms? I always think of them as filler. :/

I only visit Google and Wikipedia when I'm looking for something - a couple of times a week usually.

21

One of my new daily must-reads is the incredibly awesome new blog Stuff Christians Like. I also echo #20's recommendation of Woot. Even if you aren't interested in what they're selling, the product description is always a fun read.

#16 Nicole -
You're right IMDB is great and so is BBC America. I wonder what shows you like. Are you a fan of the comedy shows?

I also forgot to list

http://gregboyd.blogspot.com/

and

http://speakingoffaith.publicradio.org/

My list is too long already, it would seem that’s all I do.
I really do work I don't just surf the net.

6. my college email.

I will definitely be checking out some of the sites others have posted...

41

45

A few of my favorites:

www.deviantart.com (Nice, though somtimes riske art site)

www.jewishworldreview.org (Excellent, oft-updated political commentary)

www.foxnews.com (It's going downhill since they moved more entertainment info to the top of the page)

46

I don't think it's pathetic at all - I've found out about some great and useful websites from discussions like this one in the past!

47

We love the brits too. Unfortunately getting the shows over here is not as consistent as we would like. Still fun though when we can see them.

59

I forgot probably the one i really couldn't live without since moving to a new city last august! Google MAPS.. or mapquest. I use it probably twice a week and still rely on the directions I got from it EVERYDAY. Even if it occasionally forgets that the state capitol is in the middle of main st and tells me to go straight through it. :)

60

Ohh! I'm a sucker for a good list.

1. pandora.com (free customizable online radio)
2. craig's list (I'm in the market for a chair.)
3. gmail.com
4. facebook.com
5. cnn.com (for quick pre-work news scans)

Also, I second whoever recommended Hulu. Free episodes of Firefly make me a happy girl.

Moderators: Can we do a 'what are you reading' thread too?

61

Here are several sites I have suscribed to in my Google Reader...for those who don't know how it works, you can suscribe to blogs, etc., and scan through the new posts or titles...Convenient...you don't have to visit each website:

Between Two Worlds
Boundless
Challies Dot Com
Fresh Brew / Ungrind
girl talk
Ligonier Ministries Blog
Monergism
Of First Importance
Possessing the Treasure
Reformation Theology
Sovereign Grace Blog
The Blazing Center
The Shepherd's Scrapbook

Fun :)

If you'd like to leave a comment, we're afraid you'll have to use a non-mobile device to do so. I just couldn't get the mobile comment entry form to work right. Alas. ~Ted.
