Celtics vs. Lakers
by Denise Morris on 06/14/2008 at 8:59 AM
Oh my goodness. Who saw the game Thursday night?
Let me tell you right now -- it made me very happy. I'm definitely cheering for the Celtics to win over the Lakers in this series. And last night's comeback victory was amazing to watch. Here are the reasons:
1. The Lakers annoy me.
2. All of the celebrities who are suddenly Lakers fans just because they moved to southern California also annoy me.
3. I love Kevin Garnett. He does not annoy me.
3. The Celtics are a good defensive team -- something you rarely see in the NBA.
4. I like the green jerseys better than the yellow.
5. The L.A. Lakers used to be the Minneapolis Lakers, which makes much more sense. They should've changed their name when they moved.
6. Seriously, I really like KG.
I'm from Minnesota, so I watched Kevin Garnett play with the Timberwolves for a long time. He's an intense player, he's a hard worker, and he deserves to win a championship. I hope this is his year.
Who are you cheering for?

All I can say is GO! SPURS GO!-but sadly, they were eliminated by the Lakers. There is always next year. . .

I think who I'm rooting for is obvious. As a displaced New Englander besides missing my Dunkin Donuts ALOT I am missing watching every single one of our home teams going to the finals of their respective sports! It's an incredible time for people like me who grew up watching everyone of our teams LOSE all the time! Whenever I do have kids I'm going to be one of those grandpas who says: "I remember when the SOX took it all, the Pats broke our hearts, and the Celtics whipped the Lakers in one of the greatest comebacks ever". Ahhh...Someday!

*yawn* Is it training camp yet?
GO TITANS!
4. Jason said the following at 11:43 AM on Jun 14:
No... seriously, I really could care less about either team, but if I had to pick one team I'd rather see lose it'd be the Lakers because I can't stand Kobe Bryant and this absurd idea that he's anywhere near the player MJ was. Plus... I don't much care for Phil Jackson or his Hollywood Buddhism... so, go Celtics!
5. Bill said the following at 11:47 AM on Jun 14:
I'm cheering that basketball season is finally almost over. I don't care who wins. :-)
6. NeedACatchyName said the following at 12:21 PM on Jun 14:
What's this "basketball" sport that you speak of? I'm not quite sure I understand. There's only one true indoor sport in America, and that's hockey. :P
7. Matt said the following at 12:22 PM on Jun 14:
Go Lakers!
In response to your list:
1) True, the Lakers annoy most people, but that's because they dominate (14 Championships!).
2) 99.9% of the celebrities you're referring to live in L.A. so who else would they cheer for? (...the Clippers? - get real!)
3) KG is cool. I'm a fan of him too. Kobe Bryant on the other hand ... MVP MVP....
4) I think both jerseys look great. Yellow and purple is an odd combination, but it works
5) The Lakers moved to L.A. in 1960 (so the name has been around for almost 50 years), and frankly the Los Angeles Lakers has a nice ring to it.
6) Again, KG is cool, but how can you beat Kobe Bryant? MVP MVP MVP!
I'm still rooting for my Lakers! Even though we're down 3-1, I think we can make the historic comeback!
8. Tami said the following at 12:59 PM on Jun 14:
I can relate to your rationale. :)
And any love I had for the Lakers left when A.C. Green did...
9. BDB said the following at 1:40 PM on Jun 14:
For some reason, the L.A. team went home at half time...still trying to figure out why...
10. Roger said the following at 1:41 PM on Jun 14:
I wonder what God thinks when one group of his children is excessively happy and another group is excessively sad, all because of who has the lead in a series of ballgames. Do you think it gives Him amusement or sorrow to see their emotions swing with the lead change? ("Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this...but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven." Luke 10:20)
11. Amir Larijani said the following at 2:19 PM on Jun 14:
I'm a Sixers fan from the Julius Erving era; in fact, I lived in suburban Philly when Erving, Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, Maurice Cheeks, Mark Iavaroni, and Bobby Jones--with help from Caldwell Jones and Clint Richardson--swept the Lakers. In other words, I hated the Celtics.
And there was a time when I would root for the Lakers against the Celtics.
But this time, I find myself rooting for Boston. I like Phil Jackson; I think he's a class act. But Kobe Bryant is a juvenile.
Plus, I tend to root for underdogs. And all the pundits I read had the Lakers all but penciled in as champs.
I know--as a Sixers fan--this sounds sacrilegious, but it would be nice to see Boston win one.
12. Brandon said the following at 3:26 PM on Jun 14:
Lakers. I'm hoping for a 50-60 point Kobe game, and Gasol to actually get 20-25 points. The pessimist in me sees Kobe going off for 50, and the lakers losing game 6. Pretty sure they'll win Sunday, but who knows. Game 4 was crazy.
13. Derek Wong said the following at 4:25 PM on Jun 14:
Definitely the Lakers. I've lived in southern California my whole life, and I've been a Laker fan through good times (three-peat) and bad (shaq vs kobe, the del harris years, etc, etc). They're still my team, and I am still HIGHLY disappointed in that loss.
I agree with some of your points. The bandwagon fans annoy me. The name doesn't really make that much sense. I like KG (he plays with a lot of heart).
But I'm still hoping for the a miracle. Go Lakers! :)
14. Christina said the following at 6:46 PM on Jun 14:
I'm rooting for the Celtics as well. Lakers annoy me also. I totally agree with #2; I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I'm also tired of everyone praising Kobe. He whines too much.
15. Nicole (from Boston) said the following at 7:55 PM on Jun 14:
C'mon, my fellow Bostonians/New Englanders, let's make some noise!! Seriously, that game was incredible. Clearly I'm rooting for the Celtics. Although, Ray Allen is my personal favorite. :)
16. Matt S said the following at 8:16 PM on Jun 14:
Definitely rooting for the Celtics. My Blazers have lost to the Lakers in the playoffs so many times that now I always root for the Lakers to lose...
17. nikki said the following at 9:40 PM on Jun 14:
It was a very traumatic game for one very loyal Lakers fan I know in particular. I'm sure it was great if you liked the Celtics.
Since we're giving reasons, I won't cheer for the Celtics because they can't speak correctly. Everyone knows it should be "kelticks" not "sellticks."
18. Simple Mann said the following at 11:08 PM on Jun 14:
I live near Dallas and am naturally a Mavericks fan now that we have a (semi) winning team. But I grew watching the Boston Celtics with Kevin McCale, Larry Bird, "The Chief" Robert Parrish, and co. My dad was a big-time Celtics fan and he couldn't stand the Lakers. I remember my dad surprising me when I was in fifth grade by coming to me pick me up early from school so we could watch the first game of a Celtics-Lakers championship series together. I haven't enjoyed watching Boston beat LA in the NBA Finals since I was a kid. My dad past away a year and a half ago rather suddenly, but I felt like he was right there with me watching the game with me Thursday night.
GO BOSTON! And I agree about KG. In my mind, he so much more deserves his first ring than KB deserves his fourth.
I expect it will be OVER come Sunday night. GO BOSTON!
19. Vanessa said the following at 8:52 AM on Jun 15:
The Celtics knocked the Magic out of the tournament...so they better win!
20. Paul said the following at 11:00 AM on Jun 15:
ah... the Celts knocked out LeBron and my Cavaliers a month ago, and I don't really like the Lakers, and Paul Pierce annoys the heck out of me... so, even though I'm a big basketball fan, I'm not really rooting for anybody (even though I'm watching the games). besides, the refs are fixing them all anyways... (right Tim Donaghy?) ;-)
21. BDB said the following at 12:19 PM on Jun 15:
I've noticed that Phil Jackson seems to win regardless of whether he is in Chicago.
But from what I've seen, Michael Jordan is a much, much better team leader than Kobe.
There was a girl from this area - Diana Taurasi - who was always on the front page of our local sports section even though she only scored something like 8 points a game for U Conn. But over time you realized that her high school and college teams always dominated because she, like Gretsky, could assist other team members to get the shot. And that kind of leadership results in a winning team, over and over again.
Kobe is slowly learning this; too slowly.

basketball, schamasketball...bring on the (college) football season!!
23. DannieA said the following at 3:43 PM on Jun 15:
Celtics....yes I live in so. cal, but
1. Lakers annoy me
a) they have a bad attitude (e.g. punching someone out when they were trying to give a pat on the back)
b) Kobe has lost my respect and should be in jail
c) can I just say Lakers and basketball after college annoys me? In college and high school it's all about school and town pride...not so much in the NBA
24. Me said the following at 6:28 PM on Jun 15:
Celtics all the way!!
I'm from Chicago so I have much love for Phil Jackson -- but -- he has plenty of rings and...
1) Kobe gets on my nerves
2) I love Kevin Garnett
3) I love Ray Allen
Kevin and Ray are stand up guys on and off the court - I want to see them win.
Also Sam Cassell is a good guy. It would be nice to see him get other ring late in his career

I stopped regularly watching basketball back when Michael Jordan retired from the Bulls. I don't really care any more.
27. LDB said the following at 8:30 AM on Jun 16:
Wow. What a nice surprise to see an NBA post on boundless. You all should make this a regular thing. As for me I'm goin for the Lakers. I've been a real fan (as opposed to a fair weather bandwagoner) since 2000 and even tho their defense has been a disappointment in this series I won't give up on 'em. I'd say that they didn't win Game 5 so much as they survived it, but a win is a win no matter how ugly. I really want this thing to go to a Game 7 nail biter that comes down to the final minute. I think that would be a fitting conclusion to the season.
28. RDB said the following at 10:23 AM on Jun 16:
Kobe Bryant is one of the biggest jerks in all of sports. I just can't overlook that, in spite of his talents, so Boston it is. Sadly I live in Ontario where all the teams lose, in every sport, all the time.
29. Laura said the following at 10:28 AM on Jun 16:
I agree with #23...the Lakers (particularly Kobe) annoy me. I know most professional athletes are rather arrogant and are in need of an attitude adjustment, but Kobe seems to be a lot worse than the rest. His cocky smile and bad attitude in relation to all ref calls not in his favor make for a bad example (not just for kids). This seems to translate over to many (not all) Laker fans. Like some California football fans (cough, Raiders), they are rather rude and in-your-face about how awesome their team is. I personally hope the Celtics serve up some humble pie so that we can have some peace and quiet around here.
Go Celtics!!!!!

Ok, I figured the Lakers would win last night, although I was surprised at how close Boston came to shutting them down. I think it'll all be over tomorrow night.
Do you guys believe the rumors about them purposely stretching out the series in order to make a profit?
31. eve said the following at 12:46 PM on Jun 16:
GO CELTICS!
I LOVE Ray Allen ... one of a select FEW players without inked-up arms!!! Horay!!!
(I also love the rest of the team; and I'll always root for the team from the East).
32. myc said the following at 3:08 PM on Jun 16:
as long as the referees are directly governed by the NBA, there will always be credibility issues with the league.
it's no secret that the league considers some teams more financially lucrative than others, and since refs are employees of the league, they are at least indirectly influenced.
it also doesn't help that fouls have become so subjective, it is hard to question anything the refs call, because there is always some justification for it. even with direct video evidence (see the end of this year's Spurs/Lakers game 4), the best the league can do is say "whoops, sorry...but you still lose".
the NBA is a mess right now. and not just because I'm a bitter Spurs fan :)

Hmmm...I have a relative who grew up in the Boston area. He deliberately moved out West to get away from all the corruption...so the rumor is plausible...
