Three Men and a Bible: Episode #19

Ok, here's the deal. My day job is in PR and Media Relations, so I'm basically going to sell you this show. And I'll do it without shame. Because it's that good. This may be because this time I actually interview people with something to say, rather than droning on about my own lackluster ideas and experiences. If you agree, please don't say so.
This was my first year at the New Attitude conference, and after recovering from the initial shock of seeing young Calvinists jump around with their hands in the air (hello, worship meets tricep workout), I had time to be impressed by the conference's theme ("The Word of God"), resources, exhibitors, attendees and speakers.
New Attitude is the focus of this week's show, and the whole thing was recorded on location in Louisville, KY. (Does that sound impressive? It should.) Motte and I open by chatting with some listeners who visited our booth. To all of you who stopped by and said "hello," thank you! It was great to match names with faces, people I recognized from the blog and beyond. Of course you wanted to meet us to see if we're really as cool as we sound on the show. We are.
The real weight of this episode, though, is in our speaker interviews. I chatted with Josh Harris, Mark Dever and Al Mohler. These guys don't just sit around waiting to be interviewed, people. We had to stalk them mercilessly. But it paid off. I asked each of them questions related to their conference messages and/or other areas of expertise. I then asked them all the same five questions. You'll have to listen to understand what I'm talking about; let's just say it's not a stuffy parade of evangelical talking heads. Lisa "Keepin' It Real" Anderson would never allow that.
Joshua Harris (New Attitude organizer; author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye) -- 3:58
Josh talks about why this conference was started, and shares an awesome story of an attendee's heart being radically changed by the Gospel. He also compliments me on my hair. Bless him.
Dr. Mark Dever (pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church; founder of 9Marks) -- 21:52
Mark gives some no-nonsense advice on getting into the Word of God, shares what it means to "love" the Scriptures, and rebukes me for not joining his church when I attended it.
Dr. Al Mohler (president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, author of Culture Shift) -- 40:54
Al (can I call him that?!) explains the importance of apologetics for postmoderns and gives a kickin' rundown of what he'd do if he were single and looking for a wife today.
Inbox -- 56:28
Mark Dever returns to answer a listener question on how to find a solid, Bible-believing-and-preaching church. Whoa.
And finally, the music this week is provided by Zelos, an independent band from Washington, DC. I got to introduce them to the crowd at New Attitude before they performed on the Boundless Stage. This is a great group of guys with amazing hearts and fantastic talent, so check 'em out.
I'm not making this stuff up, folks. The content of this week's show is so hard-core, you'll be blown away. I am still processing some of the things that were said. Take a listen and let me know if you agree!

Great episode, Lisa. I'm very impressed with Dr. Dever and with what he has to say.
One question, though: In the picture above, are you doing Blue Steel, or is that Le Tigre?

And one more thing: I'm loving the longer runtimes. Let's start pushing the 90 minute mark.
I'm sure you've got tons of free time on your hands.

Is this my favorite show because I'm in it? Or perhaps it's because it's the first one I've listened to? Or, perhaps it could be because I finally checked it out and discovered it is, after all, gratis?
Methinks it's all three!
And now I know I'm going to be enjoying The Boundless Show every week, and catching up on previous installments. From what I've heard thus far, though, I'm sure it would be worth it even if it were $.99 apiece. (Yes, frequently the culture-opposer, I don't get into iTunes too often. ...)
Motte and Lisa, it was great re-meeting and meeting you, respectively! And yes, Lisa, New Attitude attendees are not necessarily the "Frozen Chosen" of truth-based evangelical lore, are they? :-D Though I'm more familiar with this framework of life, Church and everything, it still surprise me that they really do love this stuff: passionate and in-depth teaching and worship and everything in between. Humble orthodoxy isn't just a phrase: they're crazy for Biblical Grace and Truth and the God-honoring combination of both.

Mark Dever's segment was GREAT. This episode is the best-ever, IMHO.

Can't wait for this to finish downloading. I was an attendee at NA but unfortunately every time I was near you were lost in conversation. I really wanted to meet you.
Anybody who hasn't been to NA should consider it, or at least download the messages.
I have now been to NA a few years and each year has changed my heart in radical ways. Boundless is a big part of that as well, so a huge thank you.
I have gone from a liberal christian feminist to a conservative christian woman in large part due to the teaching I received first at NA but followed up and challenged by this website.
NA ROCKS
BOUNDLESS TOO!

I do have one comment... Can the episode number be closer to the front of the titles? My iPod's podcast list right now has a bunch of "The Boundless Sho..." and it's hard to tell between them. :)

I agree with Holly and Dave. I've (obviously) listened to all of the Boundless Show podcasts, and this was the best by far. Fun, engaging, meaningful -- this one has it all.
If you haven't heard it yet, I strongly encourage you to take some time to listen to it.

Wow, the show was really great but OH MY GOODNESS was Dr. Dever R-u-D-E!!!
I was incredibly offended. Kudos to Lisa for being such a dignified and intelligent interviewer nonetheless. Haha I would have given him a taste of his own medicine, perhaps on the topic of oh I don't know HUMILITY?!?!?

Great Episode! Got to love kicking a guy out while he is reading his Bible. Classic!
I think I appreciated Josh Harris' interview the most because he addressed an accusation I hear all the time concerning his book. He doesn't advocate a girl "dropping in your lap". I think people just never read his book and it was good to hear him address them!
I admit I also liked hearing from a fellow Bostonian ;) Go Celtics! Go Red Sox! lol

I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but the pic cracked me up. Speaking as a media person myself, I would have made the skull ring prominent. No gangsta pose at a Xtian conference is complete without it.

CCSurfer (#5): Um...
Marie (#7): Girl, you should've just busted your way into the conversation! Maybe Motte was talking to me, and I needed to be rescued! :) You are now obligated to come to CO and visit us to make up for that.
alex (#11): No worries, Dever was just being funny. He was a great interview, and so gracious in answering question after question. And really, I'm probably the first person who's ever cut him off by saying, "We're gonna need to put that at the foot of the cross..." so perhaps we're even. Clarification, though: when I said it was too bad I'm not a pastor, it's only because I enjoy preaching at people. Hehe. Believe me, I completely enjoy being a girl.
P&P (#13): Aww, I didn't even think to bring the skull ring! It would've looked great in that shot. But then again, it being my first year at Na, I wasn't sure how many Charismatic-Calvinist gangs would show up, so I had to be careful with my colors and bling to avoid trouble.

Loved loved loved this podcast!!! Possibly my favorite part was the beginning when I got to talk. :) No, seriously, I really enjoyed the speaker interviews. Mark Dever made me chuckle with his emphasis on church membership. (Lisa, how lucky, or should I say blessed, are you? You got to attend Capitol Hill Baptist and Bethlehem Baptist?? If I wasn't so enthralled with my Sovereign Grace church, I'd be tempted to jealousy. :) ) Good stuff. And Zelos is classic. And I totally agree with the folks digging the longer runtimes and longer music segments. Keep 'em coming!!
PS Matt (#12) Manny just hit homer number 500. Just thought I'd give a shout-out here since clearly that's worth celebrating with a fellow Bostonian. :)

Great to meet you and talk about Rob Bell and emergent stuff. I'll definitely be dropping in on the blog more often and try my best to do some sound contending for the old school point of view. We "jumping Calvinists" have our work cut out for us.

I think my favorite revelation is that Dr. Dever reads The Onion. That was just awesome. I'm a big fan myself, and my respect for Dever, which was already high, has gone up even more now.

Interesting discussion of the Holiness movement and social justice. I really do think that James tells us we need to be doing both. Yes, worshipping God is important. But caring for the poor is also important. Its not one or the other, it's both.

Well, I've been MIA from The Line since, like August or something... (I had been spending an unhealthy amount of time here...) But I just wanted to say that I've recently gotten a hold of the podcasts, and I love them! :D The only thing (speaking hyperbolically) that would be better is if there were also transcripts of the show available... (I'm a search-for-impactful-things-later kind of person, which is easier to do with transcripts than with just audio.)
I must admit, though, I am a little concerned for David-who-got-kicked-off-the-table... lol poor guy. Is he ok? Or is he emotionally scarred, now? (Does he frequent the Boundless websites? and will he boycott them now?)
I love all the music between segments. That's really fun.

Your concern is admirable, Aranel (#20). I am happy to report that David was a good sport about being kicked off the table...no doubt he was reading a passage on grace when we gave him the opportunity to put it into practice. :) And thanks for your feedback on the podcast; I'm glad to read that you're back in the Boundless fold!

Lisa,
I just have 2 things to say:
>>If you could be the lead singer of any group, what would it be? "Join a local church."
This one had me busting up for a good 20 seconds. It was hilarious b/c he had already harped on that for the entire first part of the segment, and then he got it in again (not to mention at the end when you were like "You have 15 minutes, so you can say 'join a local church' AND..." : )
>>I listen to hip hop, but I also like the Gaithers so I think that balances everything out.
This is just a classic line. By the way, do you like Christian rap? If you haven't heard of Grits, Lecrae, or KJ-52, definitely some good stuff to check out after you get tired of the Gaithers!
In all seriousness, though, I absolutely love the Boundless Show! You all tackle some extremely applicable issues, and I really appreciate your insights along with the humor. Next week you can fill us in on the latest bee in your bonnet! : D

Ok, Bethany M (#22), I am extremely concerned that you think I would ever tire of the Gaithers. I'm no lukewarm, fair-weather fan. In fact, just thinking about them has inspired me to pop in "A Campfire Homecoming." Truly a blessing. But I'll check out the groups you mentioned, too. Thanks!
And I DO have another bee in my bonnet. Maybe the team will let me share it next week. That, or they'll volunteer to pay for some anger management classes. :)

Great podcast, Lisa A. Unfortunately, you don't seem to have an email address (or a blurb on the "about us" page, unless I'm blind), which is sad.
Anyway, I loved the interviews and your narrating style cracks me up.

It appears that Motte and team are trying to keep details about me to a minimum, doesn't it? I'll have to confront them on it, for sure. In the meantime, thanks for listening, and yo...way to go on the sweater!!!

I felt I was right there at the conference while listening to this podcast. Could not stop laughing at Josh's funny comments. Mark's were hilarious too but I gotta applaud you also Lisa, for the smart and gracious comebacks.
That first song by Zelos really caught my attention. Really glad their music is featured more than once. I'm sure more people would notice their work very soon! =)
