Election 2006 Wrap-up
by Motte Brown on 11/08/2006 at 2:49 PM

Last night was a historic victory for the Democrats. They won the House decisively and will likely control the Senate when all is said and done. By voting out the ruling party during a war, the people were making a statement about the war itself, effectively saying we don't like it and we are weary of its managers.

It wasn't just the war though. The Republican party deflated their base with their undisciplined spending and failure to leverage the majority for Social Security and immigration reforms. Throw in the Foley and Abramoff scandals and what resulted was a very favorable climate for a "throw the bums out" election. It's unfortunate that many pro-family representatives lost their seats in the process.

The hope I see for values voters is that it appears the Democratic leadership intentionally recruited socially moderate to conservative candidates with sincere faith -- winners include Bob Casey Jr. in Pennsylvania, Heath Shuler in North Carolina and Brad Ellsworth in Indiana, all confessing pro-life believers.

Does this mean the party that once banned former Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey Sr. from giving a pro-life speech at their 1992 national convention has moderated their stance on abortion? Lord willing. Christians across the country would rejoice if there were more parity between the two parties on such moral imperatives.
